“Everybody knows that Ginkas enjoys tickling the nerves of an audience. But in ‘The Black Monk’ even spectators who are well accustomed to walking theatrical tightropes with this director will literally leap from their seats in surprise.”
Marina Davydova, Vremya
“This show produces the strongest of impressions. It does not let you go; it is as if you fall ill with it, as you do with Chekhov’s story. Neither Chekhov nor Ginkas seek to comfort the soul.”
Tatiana Shakh-Azizova, Screen and Stage
This production by Ginkas is so finely tuned in all its details; the actors are so sincere in their roles; the small stage, due to the vast black space stretching out behind it, so easily transforms into an entire universe replete with its own population, that it takes some time for the amazed spectators to come to their senses when the performance is completed … Long after the show has ended, their consciousness and souls are haunted by the memory of what they witnessed.”
Natalia Balashova, Moscow Pravda
